What Is Kale?
Kale is longevity insurance — Income Protection that helps you live longer. Your price is re-set every quarter based on how fit you actually are. Train consistently and it falls. The one thing it never does is rise above the standard price for someone your age, so connecting your fitness can only ever work in your favour. Unlike traditional cover, which only ever pays out when something goes wrong, Kale actively invests in keeping you well.
Traditional insurance prices everyone roughly the same, sets that price once, and has no interest in whether you stay healthy. Kale prices you on your actual fitness and re-sets it every quarter, so the price follows your effort rather than a decision made on the day you applied. It also gives you science-backed longevity content to help you live longer.
You can get an Income Protection quote and buy online in minutes. If you want other cover — Life Insurance, Critical Illness Cover or Health Insurance — we can arrange it over the phone. Fitness-based pricing applies to Income Protection only.
You need to be over 18 and under 64 to take out cover. Cover and payments end at 65. Final eligibility is confirmed at the point of quote based on your details, so start a quote to see the options available to you.
Your Income Protection Cover
Income Protection pays you a monthly income if illness or injury stops you working. It is not a lump sum and it is not tied to a specific illness — if you cannot work because of your health, it replaces part of your pay until you are back on your feet or the payment period ends.
Your monthly payout is capped at 65% of your gross monthly income, across this and any similar policy you already hold. We ask for your salary during the application and apply the cap before you choose your cover.
You choose a waiting period of 30, 60 or 90 days after you stop working. A longer wait means a lower premium, because your own savings bridge the gap. We suggest a waiting period based on how long you tell us your savings would last, and you can change it.
You choose either six months or 12 months per claim. It is a per-claim allowance, not a total — 12 months means 12 months for each separate claim, not 12 months across the life of the policy. Six months costs less; 12 months is what most people pick.
Injuries from ordinary training and amateur competition are covered. A narrow list of genuinely hazardous pursuits is excluded, and professional or semi-professional competition sits outside the cover. You will see the full exclusions list during the application and you have to agree to it before you buy.
Yes. Desk-based work is the cheapest to cover, a mix of desk and physical work costs a little more, and mostly physical work more again. If your occupation puts you in a different class, we tell you before your price changes.
Often yes, but pre-existing conditions are not covered unless you have been symptom free for 24 months or we have accepted them in writing. Telling us about a condition does not put your price up, and it protects your claim — a claim may not be paid if a doctor later confirms the information given was inaccurate.
How Fitness-Based Pricing Works
We connect to your fitness device (Strava or Garmin) to read your cardio, and you complete a short strength test in the app. Those two set your price. That gives you a Longevity Level from 1 to 10, and your level prices you as if you were younger than your years — the fitter you are, the bigger the gap. Your level is recalculated every quarter, so your price moves with your fitness rather than being fixed on the day you applied. It is never priced above the standard price for your real age.
Your Longevity Level is a score from 1 to 10 reflecting your current fitness. We assess three things: cardio, which comes from your connected device; strength, which you complete in the app; and health knowledge, which is a small part of the picture and does not affect your price. Your level is recalculated every quarter and sets your price for the following three months — so improving your fitness literally pays.
It depends on your level. Your Longevity Level prices you as a younger person, so the saving grows the fitter you are — a mid-table level takes a little over 10% off the standard price for your age, and the top levels take substantially more. Levels 1 to 3 pay the standard price and never more than it. You will see your exact price before you buy, and again at each quarterly check-in.
At launch, Kale supports Strava and Garmin. These cover a wide range of activities — running, cycling, swimming, gym workouts, hiking and more. We're working to add more integrations over time. If you're not sure whether your device is compatible, get in touch.
If you don't have a supported device, please contact us directly for a manual assessment. We don't want to exclude active people just because they're not using a particular platform. We'll work with you to find a way to verify your fitness level.
Your price is re-set every quarter, so yes — if your fitness drops, your price can go back up relative to what you were paying. There are two firm limits on that. It can never go above the standard price for someone your age, however unfit you get, and if you miss a check-in you step down a single level rather than straight to the top price. Nothing changes without us telling you first.
How Our App Works
The Kale app is your longevity companion. It's where you manage your policy, connect your fitness device, complete your quarterly check-in, see your Longevity Level and your price for the coming quarter, and access longevity science content. It's designed to be something you open regularly — not just when you need to think about insurance.
During the quote journey, you'll be prompted to connect your fitness device. You'll authenticate directly with Strava or Garmin or Apple Health — Kale receives read-only access to your activity data.
Yes. The app is your primary interface for everything Kale — viewing your policy details, checking your coverage, tracking your Longevity Level history and managing your device connections. If you want to change anything directly related to your insurance policy, such as your cover amount, you will need to speak to an adviser at Best Insurance, who arrange the policy.
Legal & Regulatory Questions
Your policy is arranged by Best Insurance and underwritten by Great American. Kale is what's known as an appointed introducer — we introduce you to Best Insurance and handle everything around your experience: the app, the quote journey, your Longevity Level and the ongoing relationship with you as a customer. Best Insurance takes care of the regulated side: arranging and administering your policy, and all regulatory content and customer communications.
Claims are assessed against the terms of your policy by the insurer, Great American, and administered through Best Insurance. If you need to make a claim, contact Kale through the app or website and we'll guide you through the process. We're committed to making claims as straightforward as possible — not hiding behind small print.
Kale takes data protection seriously. We comply with UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. Your personal data is encrypted, stored securely, and never sold to third parties. Your fitness data is used solely to calculate your Longevity Level, set your price and personalise your experience.
No. The fitness data we collect sets your price and nothing else — it is never used to investigate or contest a claim. Claims are assessed against the terms of your policy, not against your exercise history.
Yes. You can cancel your Kale policy at any time through the app or by contacting us. If you cancel within the cooling-off period (30 days), you'll receive a full refund. After that, cancellation is effective immediately and no further premiums are charged, but you won't receive a refund of premiums already paid.
